Ellipses Explained

The Circles are Ellipses in Sketching especially when drawn in Isometric views and 3 Dimensions.

These Ellipses are explained her in the illustration by Nikhil Badde – Design Professor.

The Minor and Major Axis when determined in the isometric square are drawn as shown in the 3 planes here. When the tilt and the angle increases, only the minor axis reduces in length (as shown on the left).

The Measure Axis however is always through the centre of ellipse and tangent to the points where the circles (ellipses) touch the frame squares.

Trophy Design

The trophy for best Designer of Concept Jewellery was designed by Nikhil Badde for Jewellery Institute SATEJ (School for Art and Technical Education in Jewellery)

Prof. Nikhil Badde designed the Trophy and the Competition Logo for ‘L’ornamento’ for the Institute. He was also the Jury member for the competition.

Calligraphy

The art of Calligraphy involves both skill and sense of aesthetics.

Prof. Nikhil Badde has been teaching Calligraphy to Design and Art Students.

Though this subject is optional, in most design institutes it is recommended to have is as a compulsory subject and every individual (weather design student or not) should learn and practice Calligraphy.

As ancient Chinese rulers practised Calligraphy and it was mandatory for the Royal heirs to learn Calligraphy for reasons of self discipline and control.

Most Fashion Terms and Accessories are not known by their right technical names but only generic terms are used for such products.

Nikhil Badde helps students and people understand the right names and terms that are used for Products and Accessories around them.

Isometric Grid – Technical Sketching

Prof. Nikhil Badde with decades of teaching experience; has helped students with teaching aids developed for design students exclusively.

The Iso-grid provided here for all students to download and use, is a unit grid of 10mm for detailed and measurement accurate sketches. Isometric circles are also provided for a variety of cylindrical and round shaped object sketching.

The upper and lower parts of the grid has only vertical lines with 10mm gap to help students practice, line extension isometric sketching independently.

The Isometric Grid is downloadable and printable to help students sketch and create technical sketches in 3D. (A4 page, printable B/W)

Product Design – Simple Techniques

Product Design can be represented and designed with simple Techniques as shown here.

Prof. Nikhil Badde has designed a product and represented its surfaces and form in a 2D Illustration Software – 'CorelDraw'

Technical Information and Technical Drawings of a Product and its Design can also be done in a similar way which will be demonstrated by Nikhil Badde – Design Professor.

This can be used for quick representation for a variety of products and their representation.

Interior Design - Public Spaces

Interior Design for a University, by Nikhil Badde - Professor of Design.

Space design for modern colleges and universities need special spatial considerations, with respect to colours, textures and also focus areas of spaces.

The classroom of a University is designed with special attention to details and this design is represented in a 3D image and visual created by Prof. Nikhil Badde.

Prof. Nikhil Badde has been visiting lecturer to Colleges of Architecture and Students of Interior Design.

Design of Concept Eyewear

Nikhil Badde designed a Concept Eyewear worn by John Abraham, in a Fashion Show.

The Design collection is however designed by a fashion designer, the Accessories were designed and developed by Nikhil Badde.

The eyewear seen in the image is a Concept Eyewear, that was developed for the collection.

Product Design and Rendering

Nikhil Badde – Design Professor designed a brush and represented it using basic sketching and rendering.

This rendering of a tooth brush is hand drawn and rendered with only poster colours.  

Observe the shadow regions near bristles and below certain parts of the brush in the 3dimension representation. On the top side is a side view profile rendered, below it is a 3dimensional representation.

Graphic Design on Small Places

Prof. Nikhil Badde designed labels for a Government Craft Product and also designed its Logo.

Logo Design or Graphics on small places is a big challenge as they are not easily visible.

Nikhil Badde demonstrates in this Label Design how effectively good graphic design can be used to create meaningful and impactful Design on Small Places.

Art Technique – Stippling by Prof. Nikhil Badde

 
Prof. Nikhil Badde has used an unconventional method to design and represent a Bike Design.

Nikhil Badde uses the stippling method, which is an artistic technique of using dots in gradation to get the desired effect.

Many such art techniques can be used with individual choices to get better and faster results.

Here, Nikhil Badde designed a bike represented using the stippling technique, by Ink.

Digital Sketching

Nikhil Badde uses digital sketch to represent Car Design.

Though it seems easy and sounds convenient, Digital Tools can only enhance your representation, they are not alternative to lack of skills of the hands.

Nikhil Badde advices design students not to be driven by digital art options, but to work upon skills at basic levels.

Pen and Pencil will help you graduate to a whole new level, while computers will only keep one entertained with endless options.

Fonts and Typo Types used by designers have their own vocabulary and also technical terms.

They are used to describe them and have also helped in deriving their names.

LESS IS MORE

‘Less is More’ - You often heard this in Design Literature.

What does it exactly mean, and how do they really do it?

Nikhil Badde has given a graphical example of some of the Industry Leaders of Media Business and their Identity Design that have evolved in their Image and Identity.

The companies and their Identities are the trademarks of the respective companies and are shown with references to their Logos only to represent how their Identities have changed.

Frankly I would like students to express their views and comment on this post with their observation.

In case requested, I shall give a brief note on Design Observations – on the image of 4 Media Companies and their Logo Design and Identity changes or makeovers.

Projection Representation

Technical Drawings have to be represented in 1st Angle Method or 3rd Angle Method,
This can be done and shown in the following manner as shown in the Image.

It is basically a ‘Solid Truncated Cone’ used as a standard norm for representation of Method of Projection or as a ‘Symbol of Projection’ both by the British and ISO standards.

Observe the standard proportion Norms used to represent it : The ‘D’ stands for the outer Diameter or the Base Diameter of the Cone. The length of the truncated cone is same as the ‘D’.

The Concept of 3D (Dimensions)

The 3 dimension or commonly known as 3D is an essential factor in understanding a form and a product in all its details. Design can be fully understood and represented accurately in Form and Dimensions with this complete understanding of 3D.

3D is a representation on 3 Planes or technically known as 3 Axis namely Axis, X, Y and Z.
Which together form 3 planes in Pairs for 2 Dimension Representation, namely Planes XY, YZ and XZ.
